McLaren has revealed Project: Endurance, an ultra-exclusive programme that allows a select group of customers to own and drive a track-only hypercar closely linked to the brand’s upcoming prototype for the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The programme is tied to McLaren’s planned return to the top class of endurance racing in 2027, where the British manufacturer will compete in the Hypercar category against major rivals. The ultimate goal is to challenge for victory at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race McLaren famously won in 1995 with the McLaren F1 GTR.

Race Car Engineering

Unlike many track-focused hypercars, Project: Endurance is closely based on a real endurance prototype. The car is being developed alongside McLaren’s LMDh race car and shares much of its core engineering.

Power is expected to come from a twin-turbocharged V6 engine, similar to the unit used in the WEC race car. The competition version also uses a hybrid system, and performance will follow Hypercar regulations that limit total output to around 670 horsepower.

The car is built around a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, helping keep weight low while maintaining the strength required for endurance racing. Aerodynamics play a major role in the design, with large front air channels, sculpted side pods, a roof scoop, and a massive rear wing all designed to generate significant downforce at high speeds.

A Historic Auction Sale

Ahead of the programme’s launch, McLaren sold its first 2027 WEC Hypercar for approximately $7.5 million (€6.5 million) at an auction hosted by RM Sotheby’s in Abu Dhabi on December 5, 2025.

The auction formed part of a special “Triple Crown” event, highlighting McLaren’s ambition to win motorsport’s three most famous races: the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

A Full Racing Programme

Project: Endurance owners will not simply receive the car. Instead, they will take part in a two-year racing programme run by McLaren.

This includes professional driver coaching, engineering support, pit crews, and private track events at major circuits around the world. The experience is designed to give owners a chance to drive the car in a proper motorsport environment with full factory backing.

Extremely Limited

Production numbers have not been officially confirmed, but the programme will be highly limited, making Project: Endurance one of the rarest vehicles McLaren has ever offered.

With prices expected to reach several million dollars, the programme represents a unique opportunity for customers to get behind the wheel of a machine closely related to the car McLaren hopes will compete for victory at Le Mans in 2027.
